Hello my lovely friends! It's been almost two weeks since I arrived in Denver and it has been 11 days since I last wrote.. sorry about that. :S
Since some of you may not know why I am even in Denver, I will now tell you the reason why. :) I am in a program called Denver Urban Semester (DUS) through Mile High Ministries. The program involves a couple classes on Mondays, 24-30 hours at an internship site on Tuesdays- Thursdays, and a class on Fridays. If you are really interested in knowing more about the program- here is a link. :) http://www.denverurbansemester.org
There are 14 other interns in the program from other colleges (mostly in the Midwest), 4 Isaachar students (http://www.issachardenver.com) and one girl from Ohio who is doing her social work practicum out here decided to join in on our classes. Getting to know and work with all of them has been an experience. I have never been surrounded by so many people who share my passions and are actively seeking to make change happen. It is incredible.
For my internship I am working with an organization called Denver Inner City Parish. They have been around the west neighborhood for the past 50 years and they do some pretty awesome things (http://www.dicp.org/dicppages/sdc.html). I am working specifically with their summer day camp program for low income families. Most of these families are Latino and live in the neighborhood.
If you know me at all you know I am not the biggest fan of children. This summer- I am in charge of a small group 9 year old kids and by small group I mean 12 kids! haha It has already been a learning experience. I have never fallen in love as quickly as I have with these children. They come from broken families and have been through so much in their little lives but they continue to love with all they have. It is truly a blessing to be around them and learn from them everyday. Also- some of the 5 and 6yr old kids decided I was their mommy.. I am not sure how to feel about this...

On a different note- public transportation makes me happy. Although it can be a pain in the rear to plan a trip, I love riding the bus or taking the light rail. :)
Ok, I am done rambling for now. If you have any questions about my experience out here, just ask. :)
Blessings,
Karla <3

I liked your blog entry, "Mommy." :) Those kids are lucky to have you in their lives this summer. I love public transportation also! (I became an expert at using the D.C. Metro during my semester there in college.) Keep the entries coming.
